When you live in a consistently warm climate, your air conditioner is likely one of your favorite household items. While you might be fond of your fancy stove or the flooring option you splurged on, it’s the air conditioner running on a sweltering day that really steals your heart! If you are having troubles with your air conditioning, you know that you won’t be able to stay comfortable for long without it, but sometimes the fix is a simple one. Before calling for emergency air conditioning repairs, try a few of these troubleshooting tips.

Troubleshooting for Common Air Conditioning Problems

The first thing you’ll want to do is check the thermostat. Even if an air conditioner is in perfect condition, it can’t run if the thermostat doesn’t tell it to! Thermostats can sometimes have batteries that need to be changed or they might have been bumped so that the air is blowing, but not cold, air-conditioned air. When you suspect issues, always check the thermostat.

If the thermostat inside looks alright, now it’s time to venture outside. Things like excess grass, plants, or foliage can sometimes creep up and grow around the outdoor part of your air conditioning unit, making it harder for the AC unit to suck in air to cool and circulate. Clear away the plants and see if that helps.

Finally, you’ll want to listen for sounds from your air conditioner. Sounds like a clicking when the unit turns on, but no cool air is a problem that needs professional help. Additionally, if you hear a screeching or high-pitched noise emanating from your air conditioning unit, that also needs professional assistance.
