On September 23, 2021, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) stated its case for reducing HFCs (hydrofluorocarbons) over the next 15 years by 85 percent due to the impact that HFCs have on global warming. Since air conditioners are on the list, along with refrigerators, as appliances that use HFCs, it stands to reason that the heating and cooling industry is wondering just how new air conditioners will need to be manufactured, not to mention serviced.
There have already been many steps in the right direction to reduce HFCs reaching the atmosphere, including rules in place regarding capturing refrigerants during repairs and installing new air conditioners so that the HFCs are not released. Moving beyond that, the institution of other refrigerants that have a lower global warming potential is likely to be seen over the next few years. There is a good chance that changes will be gradual because it will take time for old systems to reach the end of their functional lives before new air conditioners would be put into use.
